Cerebral white matter deficiencies in pedophilic men.

چکیده
The present investigation sought to identify which brain regions distinguish pedophilic from nonpedophilic men, using unbiased, automated analyses of the whole brain. T1-weighted magnetic resonance images (MRIs) were acquired from men who demonstrated illegal or clinically significant sexual behaviors or interests (n = 65) and from men who had histories of nonsexual offenses but no sexual offenses (n = 62). Sexual interest in children was assessed by participants' admissions of pedophilic interest, histories of committing sexual offenses against children, and psychophysiological responses in the laboratory to erotic stimuli depicting children or adults. Automated parcellation of the MRIs revealed significant negative associations between pedophilia and white matter volumes of the temporal and parietal lobes bilaterally. Voxel-based morphometry corroborated the associations and indicated that the regions of lower white matter volumes followed, and were limited to, two major fiber bundles: the superior fronto-occipital fasciculus and the right arcuate fasciculus. No significant differences were found in grey matter or in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Because the superior fronto-occipital and arcuate fasciculi connect the cortical regions that respond to sexual cues, these results suggest (1) that those cortical regions operate as a network for recognizing sexually relevant stimuli and (2) that pedophilia results from a partial disconnection within that network.

Because men with pedophilia present, on average, lower IQ and neuropsychologicalperformance thannon-pedophilicmen(Cantor, Blanchard, Robichaud, & Christensen, 2005; Joyal, Black, & Dassylva, 2007) as well as structural anomalies of cerebral grey matter regions (Schiffer et al., 2007; Schiltz et al., 2007) or white matter tracts (Cantor et al., 2008; Cantor & Blanchard, 2012), a growing number o...

Studies applying structural neuroimaging to pedophiles are scarce and have shown conflicting results. Although first findings suggested reduced volume of the amygdala, pronounced gray matter decreases in frontal regions were observed in another group of pedophilic offenders. When compared to non-sexual offenders instead of community controls, pedophiles revealed deficiencies in white matter onl...
متن کاملPrevalence of cerebral white matter lesions in elderly people: a population based magnetic resonance imaging study: the Rotterdam Scan Study.
OBJECTIVE White matter lesions are often seen on MR scans of elderly non-demented and demented people. They are attributed to degenerative changes of small vessels and are implicated in the pathogenesis of cognitive decline and dementia. There is evidence that especially periventricular white matter lesions are related to cognitive decline, whereas subcortical white matter lesions may be relate...
متن کاملCerebral vasomotor reactivity and extent of white matter lesions in middle-aged men with arterial hypertension: a pilot study.
BACKGROUND Cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) impairment and cerebral white matter lesions (WMLs) are associated in elderly or patients with overt cerebral ischemia. Such association has not been confirmed for asymptomatic middle-aged individuals with risk factors for stroke. We assessed the relationship between the CVR and the presence of WMLs in a middle-aged population-based cohort of hyperten...
متن کاملDrinking history associations with regional white matter volumes in alcoholic men and women.
BACKGROUND Alcoholism has been repeatedly associated with gray and white matter pathology. Although neuroimaging has shown alcoholism-related brain volume reductions and axonal compromise, the integrity of white matter volumes in chronic alcoholism has been challenging to measure on a regional level. METHODS We first examined the effects of alcoholism on cerebral white matter volumes by lobar...
